What Are ERMI and HERTSMI-2?

ERMI (Environmental Relative Moldiness Index) and HERTSMI-2 are DNA-based dust tests performed by EnviroBiomics Laboratory in San Antonio, Texas.

Unlike air sampling, these tests analyze settled dust collected from the home.

Because dust accumulates over time, it can provide insight into historical contamination that may not be captured during a short-term air test. ERMI was developed as a tool to evaluate the potential risk of indoor mold growth and associated occupant exposure, while HERTSMI-2 focuses on five mold species commonly associated with water-damaged buildings.

These tests are particularly useful when:

  • Occupants report ongoing symptoms
  • Mold cannot be visually identified
  • Previous testing was inconclusive
  • A history of water damage exists
  • Remediation effectiveness is being evaluated
